Small grids at hard level behave differently from large ones. There is little empty filler, so most letters are doing real work for at least one answer, and crossings are constant. A letter you have already used is often part of something else running the other way, which makes crossing words off feel less final.
The space list helps and hurts in equal measure. The words are easy to recall, so nothing sends you to a dictionary, but the shorter ones fit almost anywhere on a board this size and can hide upside down in the middle of a longer entry. Good for solvers who want difficulty without a long commitment.
Work the repeated first letters together. Several answers on this list open with M, so when you find one, check every other M on the board in all eight directions before moving to a new letter.
