Medium adds the two diagonals. A word can drop from upper left to lower right, or rise from lower left to upper right, while still being spelled in its ordinary order. Nothing reads backwards. The change looks small written down and feels larger in practice, because a single letter can now begin a word in four different ways.

This width carries the theme comfortably: the ball games, the water sports, the martial arts and the running events all fit without the grid feeling stuffed. It is also the shape most people picture when they think of a word search, which makes it the safe choice when you are printing for a group of mixed experience.

Tilt the sheet until one diagonal runs straight up and down. Scanning a slant is much easier when your eyes can follow a vertical line.
