Keyboard: arrows to move, Enter to start a word, arrows to extend, Enter again to confirm, Esc to cancel.

On a compact board the filler letters sit closer to the answers, so false starts are frequent: a promising run of letters turns out to be two words touching. Short animals suffer most from this. A name like Owl or Fox can be buried inside a diagonal that belongs to something else entirely, and it takes a second look to separate them.

It rewards close reading rather than stamina. The board fits on a small page, the sitting stays short, and the difficulty comes from the density of the letters rather than the distance your eye has to travel. Good for a coffee break, or for anyone who finds large sheets tiring to look at but still wants diagonals in play.

Anchor on the odd letters: the Z of Zebra and the Q of Squirrel appear almost nowhere else, so finding either one points straight at a word.
