Small and hard is an unusual pairing. There is no empty margin to help you: entries share letters, reverse into each other and finish against an edge, and the filler between them looks just as plausible as the answers. Solvers who find large hard grids tiring often prefer this one, because the effort is concentrated instead of spread out.

The words themselves stay ordinary. Nothing on the list is obscure, and most of it would come up describing the day out loud, from sleet to a puddle, so the challenge comes entirely from placement rather than vocabulary. That is worth saying to anyone you hand it to, because a hard grid can look unfair before it looks solvable.

Give each row a second reading from right to left and each column one from the bottom up; on a board this narrow, a full mirror pass costs little.
