Keyboard: arrows to move, Enter to start a word, arrows to extend, Enter again to confirm, Esc to cancel.

On a reduced board the words are packed close together, and their letters overlap more often. A diagonal can cut straight through two other entries, and a run of correct letters can end in nothing. The density is the difficulty here, not the direction count: the same two slants as the standard grid, in much less space.

The weather list suits that squeeze, because so many of its words are short and blunt: hail, sleet, the plain names for what is falling. The longer ones, the named storms, are the entries to fix first, since a board this narrow gives them almost nowhere to go once the diagonals are counted.

Hunt letters rather than words: pick out every Z and Y on the board first, because only a couple of entries use them and each one lands you almost instantly.
