Solved

Keyboard: arrows to move, Enter to start a word, arrows to extend, Enter again to confirm, Esc to cancel.

Compression is what makes this one awkward. In a small field the answers are forced close together, so a single letter often serves two words at once, one of them running backwards. You end up rejecting more candidate runs than you accept, and the last few animals can sit in plain view for a surprisingly long time.

The upside is that the whole board stays within one glance, which changes the method: instead of touring the grid, you can pick a letter and check every direction leading out of it before moving to the next. It suits players who already finish hard grids comfortably and want something sharper than a long sheet.

Use the rare consonants as pivots: X and K belong to very few animal names, so wherever one appears, read outwards from it in all directions before deciding it is filler.
